Darts in Hamdor

301 and 501 are the best-known darts games. Both players start on the same number and every dart's score comes off it. The winner is the first to reach exactly zero. Accurate throwing matters, but the finish is all arithmetic: which number you leave yourself and which dart you finish on.

In Hamdor you can play darts online against real players, challenge a friend in a private room with a code, practise offline against a bot, or play two on one phone. The shop has dart looks you buy with coins; they change only how the game looks.

How to play Darts

  1. Both players start on 101, 301 or 501 and take turns of three darts. Who throws first is drawn at random.
  2. Each dart's score comes off your number. The outer ring (double) counts twice, the middle ring (treble) three times; the outer bull is 25 and the bullseye 50.
  3. The goal is to bring your number down to exactly 0 (a checkout).
  4. Going below 0 is a bust: your turn ends there and your number goes back to what it was at the start of the turn.
  5. Easy mode: reaching exactly 0 is enough. You don't have to throw all three darts; you can finish with the first or second dart of your turn.
  6. Pro mode (double-out): you must reach exactly 0 and the last dart must land on a double ring or the bullseye. Reaching 1, or 0 without a double, is a bust too.
  7. If the first player checks out, the other still throws their turn of that round, so both have the same number of turns. If they check out too, it's a playoff.
  8. In the playoff each player throws one dart; the dart closest to the centre of the board wins. A tie is thrown again.
  9. Throwing: put your finger on the board and move the reticle; your hand wobbles a little and steadies the longer you hold still. Let go to throw.
  10. If a game reaches 30 rounds, the lower number wins.

These are the exact rules Hamdor plays by; the app shows them too, under each game's How to play tab.

301 and 501 in Hamdor

  • Quick Play, 301 Easy: reaching exactly zero is enough, with any ring.
  • 301 and 501 Pro (double-out): the last dart must land on the double ring or the bullseye.
  • 101 Easy and Pro: for private games and bots, a short match to practise your finishing.
  • Bust: going below zero, or in Pro mode reaching 1 or hitting zero without a double, ends your turn and puts your number back where the turn started.
  • Equal turns and playoff: if the first player checks out, the other still throws that round; if they check out too, each throws one dart and the closest to the centre wins.
  • One-finger throwing: put your finger on the board and move the reticle. Your hand wobbles a little and steadies the longer you hold still; let go to throw.

Tips to win at darts

  • Wait for a steady hand. The reticle calms down when you hold still. Don't rush; release when it settles on your target.
  • Score on treble 20. Treble 20 is worth 60, the most on the board, and three of them make 180. Remember 1 and 5 sit either side of the 20, so wait if your hand is shaking.
  • Leave an even number in Pro. You can only finish on a double, so an odd number costs you an extra dart. 40 (double 20) and 32 (double 16) are the classic finishes.
  • Love 32. Miss double 16 into single 16 and you leave 16, which is double 8. 32 halves again and again and always leaves a double.
  • The bull is a double too. In Pro mode the 50 bullseye also finishes, so with 50 left one dart in the centre wins it.
  • Go gently near zero. Going past zero is a bust in Easy mode too. With a small number left, aim at singles instead of trebles and finish with your first or second dart.
  • Never leave 1. In Pro mode reaching 1 is a bust, since 1 can't be finished on a double. Work out what you leave before every dart.

Darts FAQ

What are the rules of 301 and 501 darts?

Both players start on 301 or 501 and throw three darts a turn. Each dart's score is subtracted, and the first to reach exactly zero wins.

What is a bust in darts?

Going below zero ends your turn and resets your number to where the turn began. In Pro mode, reaching 1 or hitting zero without a double is also a bust.

What does double-out mean?

In Pro mode, the dart that brings you to zero must land in the outer double ring or the bullseye. Easy mode has no such rule.

What if both players check out in the same round?

It goes to a playoff: each player throws one dart and the one closest to the centre of the board wins. A tie is thrown again.
